Bird’s Nest: What’s Best?

FUN FACT:  Did you know that the female birds are usually the ones meticulously constructing their nests and fending for their young? Kudos to all mothers indeed.

And personally, we have this particular breed of birds to thank: swiftlets. The bird’s nest produce that we consume are made from their nests but don’t worry, we wait for the swiftlets to leave their nests for good before they are farmed.

Now when it comes to bird’s nest drinks, there are indeed many options out there – but do you know if the one you have been consuming is of optimal quality? Is it giving you the best bang for your buck?

Here are some things you can start taking note of:

1. Check the ingredients label

The concoction may seem rich, thick and filled with the goodness of the swiftlet’s nest.

However, be aware that some bottled bird’s nest drinks are mostly made up of ingredients that resemble bird’s nest; like seaweed and white fungus.

2. Clarity of the solution

The solution in the bottle should be clear and not murky and cloudy. If it is murky, it is likely that it has not been processed well.

3. The Strands Test

Flip the bottle as seen in the picture and observe. If you see the bird’s nest strands falling very slowly or they aren’t even moving, it means there are too much stabilisers and additives! If you’re taking bird’s nest pretty regularly, the volume of intake could be excessive and might be damaging to your health.
